Rather than trying to hide her scar, Lola found a way, through her scar (and the universal language of “selfies”), to inspire others, raise awareness about congenital heart defects, and redefine beauty for heart warriors like herself, and others who are battling self-image issues.

Open-heart surgery is a scary thought for everyone, so you would imagine it would be terrifying for a 12-year old girl. It must have been, though Lola made everyone around her feel like she was so excited and looking forward to what her life would be like without “feeling sick”, that it made it very hard for anyone to understand the severity of her health issues. Post surgery, while her family members feared that a scar on a teen girl’s chest might be a cause for sadness and self-image issues, Lola soon proved everyone wrong. The book is the perfect gift for heart warriors, and teens dealing with body and self-image issues. The text is in both English and Spanish. The images are universal. Beautiful Scars  (click here to purchase)
